A new era begins at Brick Memorial, as former Mustang standout Mike Kiley takes over the reins and guides the Stangs into their 35th Anniversary season. What coach Kiley inherits is a team that is a pretty even mix of experienced returners, promising newcomers, and a pair of flat out studs.
The upper half (152-Hwt) of the lineup is where Memorial returns the bulk of their experience. Of course, you have to start with the big gun at heavyweight in Nick Rivera. The accolades are long, a State runner-up in 2015, a 2x Region champ, 3x District champ. No doubt that when you talk favorites for the State title at heavyweight this season, Rivera's name immediately comes into the conversation. More importantly for the Stangs, he gives them a huge presence at the top of lineup, and can hopefully help guide the newcomers coming into the lineup up top. The Mustangs also return experience in the upper half in senior Chris Richardson, junior Ron Hopping, and sophomore Ean Mueller. Each won 11 bouts in 2016, but when you take the level of competition into consideration, these were probably 20-match winners at a lot of other programs. That said, with the year of experience, and the work put in during the off-season, 20+ wins is more than reasonable to expect out of this talented trio.
The lower half of the lineup is anchored by the UPenn-bound Gianni Ghione. A 2-time Top 4 finisher in the State, he will have his eyes for the spot on the very top of the Boardwalk Hall podium in March. In the meantime, he leads a group that is projected to be made up of juniors and below, giving the Stangs a pretty youthful bunch. Junior Matt Wardlaw, a 2-time District champ, gives Memorial another solid, dependable presence down low. At 106-113, Joe Rotundo missed most of last season to injury and it thrust Liam Rivera into the lineup. With Rotundo back at 106, Rivera getting valuable experience, and the presence of talented frosh Mike Richardson who is expected to see time in the lineup, it gives coach Kiley options down low.
Memorial will be an interesting team to watch. Where they're good, they are very good, and you know what to expect. The question on dual success will depend heavily on how fast the inexperienced, but talented group of new faces come along. This is definitely a team you'd probably prefer to face in December/early January rather than later on, when you know they'll get things rolling on as usual. The schedule is brutal early on. There's the season opening tilt against Southern on 12/16, the Mustang Classic on 12/28, the Jags come into town on 1/4, and a trip to a rising Lacey team on 1/5. The early tests should pay off as the season rolls on, and as long as they stay healthy, they won't be a team anyone wants to face when Sectionals roll around.
